Coding Supervisor ED,OP Surgery & Observation Coding

SCHEDULE: 40 hours Mon- Fri.
CREDENTIALS: RHIA or RHIT and CCS credential required
QUALIFICATIONS/JOB DESCRIPTION:
- The Coding Supervisor of ED, OP Surgery, and Observation Coding, under the direction of the Manager of ED, OP Surgery, and Observation Coding, is responsible for providing daily operational oversight of the ED, OP Surgery, and Observation Coding Specialists
- The Coding Supervisor serves as the immediate supervisor, and coding authority for the Outpatient Coding Specialists. The Coding Supervisor is required to maintain coding, abstracting, and knowledge of CMS’s reimbursement methodology, CPT/ HCPCS coding methodologies, as well as Maryland’s HSCRC requirements at a level that exceeds that of the ED, OP Surgery, and Observation Coding Specialists.
- This position will provide leadership to support the goals of the Outpatient Coding Division of accurate code assignment, timely billing, and accurate reimbursement.
- Minimum of three to five (3-5) years of supervisory experience in Health Information Management and Coding.
- Expert knowledge of current coding classification systems
- Provides supervision and oversight for a high-quality coding program to meet the minimum required coding quality accuracy of 95% or higher, while maintaining financial expectations for DNFB
- Experience and knowledge of ICD-10 Diagnosis Coding, CPT/HCPCS Coding and Coding Modifiers
- Serves as an expert coding resource for all Outpatient Coding Specialists
- Monitors all relevant EPIC & 3M HDM coding work queues daily and assigns work to Outpatient Coding Specialists to ensure timely coding and billing
- Assists with the development and delivery of ongoing education related to coding guidelines, coding updates, software updates, coding and billing compliance, and regulatory updates
- Assists with the development of new hire orientation and initial training
- Assists with productivity analysis, on-going quality review results analysis, and follow-up education for new and existing Outpatient Coding Specialists
- Assists in the monitoring of outpatient coding performance standards, to ensure the highest level of coding accuracy for revenue cycle activities associated with Outpatient Coding
- Coaches and supports individual performance, which impacts division, and organizational performance
- Applies employee engagement strategies to increase employee engagement and retention
Provides regular feedback to Outpatient Coding Specialists to ensure high quality of all performance indicator benchmarks, as outlined in the performance monitoring program - Assists with holding employees accountable for individual performance metrics
- Coordinates and supervises work assignments using the Electronic Medical Record work queues
- Approves or denies requests for time off, to ensure levels of staffing to support established goals, and maintains schedule to reflect adequate staffing
- Maintains, calculates, and reports bi-weekly attendance of Outpatient Coding Specialists for payroll and personnel purposes
- Maintains routine communication with coding staff to inform of department operational updates, coding updates, and/or procedural changes
- Provides regular updates to Coding Manager regarding individual and team performance, concerns related to process and technology, and ideas for improvement
