This position is responsible to provide high quality coding of diagnoses & procedures on Inpatient Charts, with ICD-10-CM & ICD-10-PCS coding systems, as well as accurate assignment of MS-DRG and APR-DRG, after an extensive review of the clinical documentation/chart. This position is also required to abstract data elements for internal and external data submissions as required by CMS, HSCRC and other regulatory agencies. Qualified candidates are responsible to code all types of Inpatient charts; Inpatient charts possess the utmost complexity and the skill level required for this position is found in a prominent, experienced & proficient Inpatient Coding professional.High quality coding is essential in this position, for accurate billing, for internal & external reporting, as well as internal & external data analysis purposes. To accomplish this, this position requires thorough, ethical, accurate, & high quality coding practices, to ensure Coding Compliance, high level of data quality and the expedition of reimbursement. As assigned, this position may also be assigned to code other work types as needed to maintain workflow of all work types to be within the bill hold and to maintain minimal Coding Days in AR/Accounts Receivables.
Educational Requirements:
- Four year degree acquired from an AHIMA approved program with RHIA credentials, or Two-year degree acquired from an AHIMA approved program with RHIT credentials, and/or CCS credentials, acquired through successful completion of AHIMA’s CCS exam
Experiential Requirements:
- Minimum of three – five years hospital Inpatient coding experience which includes coding of Acute Care, Med – Surg, Trauma, Rehab, Psych, OB & NB records. As well as comprehensive experience with MS-DRGs & APR-DRGs, along with detailed experience in abstracting data elements from medical records.
- Demonstration of skills through completion of a hospital administered advanced coding test with a satisfactory score.
Licensure/Certification:
- Minimum of one of the following credentials is required: CCS (Certified Coding Specialist), RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) or RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician)
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Must have an extensive knowledge of ICD-10 Coding systems, MS-DRG & APR DRG methodology, Federal Coding Guidelines, National Standards of Ethical Coding, UHDDS Reporting Guidelines, HSCRC State Reporting Guidelines
- Extensive computer application experience, comprehensive analytic skills and ability to utilize multiple software programs to complete day to day coding tasks.
- Excellent human relation & communication skills, and must be able to tactfully query physician and diplomatically handle controversial issues as well as address issues of non-compliance with members of other departments and the Medical Staff.
